How to eat sushi?
Sushi is an extraordinary dish that is healthy and beautiful, but it is also associated with a specific way of eating it. To eat sushi correctly, you first need to get special dishes intended for this dish, preferably as part of a sushi set. Soy sauce and ginger are served in a small bowl, and the amount is important – since it is only an addition, there should not be much of it. It’s good to know that dipping large pieces of sushi in a lot of sauce is considered rude and also worsens the taste experience.
Japanese etiquette says that wasabi, or Japanese horseradish, should not be added to soy sauce. Instead, you put small portions of it on the sushi pieces, after dipping them in the sauce. You eat ginger between different types of sushi because it cleanses the taste buds and allows you to fully experience the taste of the next products. Chopsticks are used to eat sushi, although there are types of this dish that are eaten only with fingers. This includes nigiri, which consists of rice with a piece of fresh fish placed on top. In the case of this dish, you do not dip the rice in soy sauce (only the fish), because without the protection of nori, it can fall apart.
Regarding the way of eating sushi, you should not divide the pieces in half – it is considered a faux pas. You eat all the pieces whole, in one bite. This way, you appreciate the taste of the dish and the coherence of all the ingredients that the professional sushi masters have composed. Due to the special and careful preparation process of sushi, the chef may even take the dividing of the pieces into parts as an insult.
