The Higonokami pocket knife, which enjoys the greatest recognition in Japan, is as famous as the Swiss Army knife in Switzerland and around the world. The special ‘chikiri’ mechanism, with which the Higonokami is equipped, is intended for opening it. It is a small, forged lever that has been in the design of the Japanese knife since the beginning, i.e., since 1896. With its help, one can perform daily tasks such as opening packages, slicing fruit, sharpening pencils, etc. The durable Higonokami pocket knife is characterized by its lightness and simple construction, as well as its versatile application. In the BRASS series, high-grade Aogami #1 steel, which has been hardened to 62-63 HRC, was used for production. It is a traditional Japanese blue steel, which is created as a carbon steel alloy. Thus, Higonokami pocket knives do not belong to the stainless group, but they are very easy to sharpen. The patina that covers the blade over time adds a unique character to it. The Higonokami does not have a locking system, so friction is used to keep the blade in a safe position. Pressing the ‘chikiri’ lever allows the blade to be removed from the handle, which will be open as long as it is held with the thumb. The Higonokami knife should be cared for by rinsing and drying it thoroughly after each use.
