Already at the stage of choosing the perfect set of knives for the kitchen, it’s worth thinking about their subsequent storage. This is of great importance in relation to the use of knives, safety, keeping the blades clean, and, above all, caring for their condition. When choosing high-quality, very sharp knives, we want to maintain these product features for longer. Well-stored blades will not require sharpening as often as those carelessly thrown into a drawer. In addition, beautiful knives deserve a proper setting, and even display in the kitchen interior. One must not forget about safety – both for knife users and for small household members. The choice of the right way to store a set of knives is therefore crucial and worth careful consideration.
How can knives be stored?
There are several ways to store knives, and thus also several different products that enable such storage. Kitchen knives should certainly not lie loosely on the kitchen counter, even if we use them very often. You also should not keep knives loose in a drawer, because they will quickly lose their sharpness. Knives can be stored:

in a special knife block that is placed on the countertop,
on a magnetic strip, i.e., in a hanging position on the wall,
  in a wooden sheath (Saya)
  in a drawer organizer.

Additionally, knives purchased as a gift should be placed in a special wooden box, which will not only protect their blades but also display their beauty. On the other hand, knives with which a cook travels and moves around should be packed in a suitable bag or case during transport, i.e., packaging adapted for carrying blades in all conditions.
What is the most convenient way to store knives?
Every way of storing knives has its pros and cons. A specific gadget for storing a given set should therefore be chosen according to individual needs. If a cook’s priority is easy access to knives, a block or a magnetic strip will work best in their kitchen. In both cases, reaching for the selected blade is a matter of just reaching for it. The blade is not protected by a sheath, so you can use it for cutting or chopping at any time. The magnetic strip is considered the most universal solution. It is easy to keep clean and can hold any type of knife. In addition, you can attach other accessories to it, such as metal hooks for spatulas and serving spoons. Its only disadvantage is the need for skillful use of the strip – the knife is placed on it by pressing the blunt side of the blade against it, which prevents damage to the sharpened edge. A kitchen knife block is also a very convenient solution. In a block, knife blades are somewhat hidden (depending on the model), which protects them from dirt and dust. Some knife blocks can be difficult to keep clean, although this is not a rule. Steel models do not promote the growth of bacteria thanks to their perfectly smooth surface.
What is the safest way to store knives?
Keeping knives on the counter in a kitchen block or on the wall with a magnetic strip is not always an option. When there are also small children living in the cook’s house, it’s better to keep the blades out of sight – in a drawer or a high-up cabinet. However, you must first secure them properly. Knife sheaths and organizers help protect blades from dulling and easily keep the storage area tidy. The best knife sheath is a product made of wood, which is soft and naturally antibacterial, thanks to which it takes care of both hygienic cleanliness and the sharpness of the knife.
How to effectively display knives in the kitchen?
When buying beautiful knives, for example, from Damascus steel, we want them to be a decoration for the kitchen. So there is no point in hiding them in a drawer. A strip or a block with a special, open design will work much better for storing such knives. Both products will help protect the blade from dulling and properly display its beauty. At the same time, they will allow the cook to comfortably reach for the handle whenever needed. You can find more information about knife storage in our blog post available here.
