The most famous pocket knife from Japan – Higonokami – is as highly regarded in the Land of the Rising Sun as the esteemed Swiss Army knife is worldwide. The Higonokami has a special type of mechanism, the so-called ‘chikiri,’ which was developed in 1896. A small, forged lever (the aforementioned ‘chikiri’) is used to open the pocket knife. Its everyday use is very broad and includes, for example, sharpening pencils, opening various types of packaging, and also slicing fruit, etc. The lightweight and very durable Higonokami pocket knife has a simple construction. Its small size and functionality make it perfect as a handy tool for many daily tasks. The BRASS version is made using a traditional Japanese steel famous for its high quality – blue Aogami #1. Thanks to the hardening process, its hardness reaches 62-63 HRC. Aogami is made from a carbon steel alloy, which makes sharpening very easy, but it should be noted that the knife is not stainless. The blade of the Higonokami pocket knife gets covered with a patina over time and with use, which creates its unique character. It is held in place by friction (this is the solution that replaces a locking system). To pull the blade out of the pocket knife’s handle, simply press the iconic ‘chikiri’ lever – when using the knife, we hold it with our thumb to keep it open. Rinsing and drying after each use is the best and required way to care for a Higonokami.
