Miyagoshi Rouran 220 – Preliminary Sharpening Stone (#220)
Miyagoshi Seito (宮越製陶) is a small Japanese workshop from Kyoto specializing in the production of high-quality whetstones. The Rouran 220 model is a coarse abrasive stone, intended for intensive blade work—especially for restoring severely dulled edges or removing chips.
It is made in a controlled sintering process, where the abrasive is bound with a durable fired binder at high temperatures. As a result, the stone offers high abrasive aggression while maintaining dimensional stability and high wear resistance.
Application of #220 grit
The 220 grit is a typical choice for preliminary sharpening:
- for fast material removal from the blade,
- for correcting chips and damage to the cutting edge,
- for restoring the blade to a usable condition before further sharpening.
It’s ideal for kitchen knives, workshop tools, and steel blades that require a complete reconstruction of the cutting geometry.
Key Features:
- artisanal production in Kyoto—full quality control,
- fast and effective work—very good abrasive aggression,
- durable, vitrified structure—the stone wears down slowly,
- large working size—convenient for working with larger knives as well,
- pleasant-to-use pink coloring—better visibility of work marks.
